What is H. pylori?
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a spiral-shaped gram-negative bacterium that is found in the gastric mucous layer or adherent to the epithelial lining of the stomach. H. pylori has shown to be a causative agent of type B active chronic gastritis. It causes more than 90% of duodenal ulcers and up to 80% of gastric ulcers. Current tests for diagnosing H. pylori infection involve histological staining and/or culture of antral biopsy methods. However, these techniques are invasive, and alternative, noninvasive methods such as the urea breath test and serological tests are available. The Humasis H. pylori Antigen test is a rapid immunochromatographic assay for the qualitative determination of H. pylori antigen of all isotypes. It is a presumptive test intended for use as an aid in the diagnosis of H. pylori infections.
